Abstract:
It was necessary for the Athenians to go through two layers of important scrutiny by their phratria and demos to get citizenship in Classical times. The phratria’s scrutiny happened twice, with the target people being infants and 16 year-old juniors. In the process of phratria’s examinations, guardians and examiners should guarantee that the candidates have the legitimate identity by swearing and sacrificing. The qualified infants not only had their status be verified, but also partly had the public identity as a member of his phratria. The qualified juniors acquired the full membership of their phratria. Around the age of 18, they would subject to the scrutiny of demos. The qualified candidates became the ephebi, and then after two years of military training, they would become citizens who could participate in the Assembly. This was the main method for Athens to get their citizenship, which displayed the closed and exclusive nature of the citizen group.
