Abstract:
In the early third century B.C., the Seleucid Kingdom covered a wide territory from Syria to Central Asia, occupying the main road of East-West trade. Through the construction of transportation facilities, unification of currency and other policies, the Seleucid Kingdom promoted the development of the East-West overland trade. Such commercial cities as Antioch and Seleucia of the Seleucid Kingdom located in the transport hub, gradually rose. After independence of the Parthia Kingdom in the mid-third century B.C., the relations between the Seleucid Kingdom and the Parthia Kingdom had an important impact on the overland trade between the East and the West. Although occupying Iran and Mesopotamia in succession, the Parthia Kingdom itself played an intermediary role in the the East-West overland trade, with the trade route from India and Central Asia to the eastern Mediterranean never interrupted. In the late 2nd century B.C., Zhang Qian was sent as an envoy to the Western Regions twice and connected the trade routes from Chang’an to Central Asia, marking the official opening of the Silk Road. So far, the Silk Road from China to Central Asia, India and the eastern Mediterranean opened completely. Before the arrival of the Romans, the eastern Mediterranean region had been under the regime of the Seleucid Kingdom for more than two hundred years, laying a solid foundation for the Roman Empire managing the western part of the Silk Road.
