Abstract:
To promote China’s human rights by following American-style criteria is one of the significant goals of America’s policy to China. Due to the conceptual and cognitive differences, the human rights issue is always the most troublesome and sensitive issue in Sino-US relationship. American media reports are the sources of the cognition of China’s human rights of American people, and they may influence the public opinion and government officials. Thus, the mass media play important roles in Sino-US relationship. This research conducted a statistical analysis of the reports about China and human rights by New York Times and The Washington Post from July 1st, 2010 to June 30, 2012. The conclusion is made as follows:although American media are formally independent from the government and they are free, objective and just, the reports about China and human rights have obvious preference in content selection, information sources, and attitude tendency. The preference has negative influence on China’s image and Sino-US relationship.
